Meet Doralee!
Here's the story: we had committed to rescuing this sweet little girl after she was found as a stray and taken to an emergency clinic. Nobody came looking for her, so we got the call that she was ready to go. And then we found out… she was pregnant.
Now, before anybody wants to jump us, yes, if a dog comes into our rescue early in a pregnancy, we will absolutely spay her. The reality is that there simply are not enough homes for all the dogs already being born, sitting in shelters, and waiting in rescues. And, of course, we have absolutely no idea what canine gentleman got her in the motherly way. All of those things, plus the status of the mother’s health, are always taken into consideration. Spaying a pregnant dog protects the mother's health, prevents the spread of illnesses to fragile newborns, and directly combats the pet overpopulation crisis. So, we took her straight to our vet to see exactly what we were dealing with.
SURPRISE AGAIN! An ultrasound showed that this little mama is very close to delivering! At that point, needless to say, the plan changed.
So we are officially on puppy watch now and, based on X-rays, expect to have 2-3 little babies joining the rescue very soon!
Doralee is just a baby herself, probably only about a year old, and once she is done with being mom, she will be spayed and then be ready to find a home that will "baby" her, as she deserves for the rest of her life. She is such a sweet girl and has been the best houseguest, and great with other dogs and kids!
Sweet Doralee is currently in an experienced doggy-delivery foster home, safe, comfortable, and being closely watched.
And now… the waiting begins!
