To Foster a Dog! Keep Reading...

What is Fostering and How Will It Impact Me?

Fostering means bringing a homeless dog into your home, caring for them, and providing them with affection and socialization until a permanent family who will love them forever adopts them.

The benefits of fostering are numerous, and not only a wonderful thing for the dog and rescue, but can be beneficial to the foster family in so many ways!

0-1
  1. FOSTERING SAVES LIVES

Tails of Hope Dog Rescue has no physical facility, so we rely solely on foster homes to determine how many dogs we can pull from shelters in the area who may be long-term residents and/or at risk of euthanasia due to overcrowding. Fosters are also crucial to our ability to help expectant female dogs, by providing a quiet and comfortable atmosphere to deliver puppies and care for them in those first weeks of crucial development.

  2. YOU HAVE A HAND IN HELPING MAKE THE dog MORE "ADOPTABLE"

Oftentimes, dogs do not "show" well in a shelter environment due to excess energy or jockeying for attention as potential adopters walk by. While fostering a dog, you can provide exercise and stimulation, which in turn creates a calmer dog and provides an opportunity for the dog to learn how to live in a loving home environment. You can also work with the dog on leash training, house training, or other basic command training that potential adopters will find attractive when looking for the perfect dog for their family.

  3. YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO CHANGE A dog'S FUTURE

Tails of Hope Dog Rescue relies on our dedicated fosters to help us rehabilitate those dogs who may have endured a difficult past, such as abuse, cruelty, neglect, undersocialization, lack of medical care, etc. As a foster family, you can gain a dog's trust, show them human touch and love, perhaps for the first time, provide an environment to feel safe, and watch them transform before your eyes.

  4. FOSTERING CAN BE GREAT FOR YOUR FAMILY

If you have existing pets, introducing a dog can be a great experience for them as an additional companion, an opportunity for socialization, and as an additional playmate! Children can benefit from fostering as a way to introduce responsibility and selflessness and as a way to educate them about animals.

  5. YOU BECOME PART OF A WONDERFUL "COMMUNITY"

Tails of Hope Dog Rescue has a wonderful group of foster families who will help guide you through the experience, give ideas, answer any questions, and may even become your friends! There is nothing quite like sharing experiences with those who do the same and being part of a community of people with similar passions.

  6. YOU WILL MAKE SOMEONE'S FAMILY COMPLETE

When the day comes that your foster finds that perfect home, the rewarding feeling you will experience is something very special. You will feel a sense of pride in knowing what you helped that dog accomplish during his time with you. You will feel overjoyed that they have found their forever family and happy ending, which all homeless dog deserve. And while some goodbyes can be tough, knowing that a dog has found their happy ending and that another precious life awaits a safe place to live and rehabilitate is as good of a feeling as there is!

Foster Family Requirements

Please read through the Foster Requirements listed below. We invest a significant amount of time and money into ensuring our dogs are healthy and happy, and we reserve the right to place our dogs and puppies into the safest, loving, and most responsible foster home available. Tails of Hope Dog Rescue provides everything you need (crate, food, medical, etc.), and you provide the love.

We are all volunteers with jobs, families, and, of course, dogs to care for, so please allow a minimum of 5-7 days from receipt of an application for a volunteer to contact you. If you do not hear back after that time frame, please email us at [email protected] to request an update on the status of your application.

If you do not meet these requirements, please do not apply.

  • Minimum Age. The applicant must be 25 years of age to foster with Tails of Hope Dog Rescue.
  • Local to Memphis Area. Tails of Hope Dog Rescue only accepts foster families that are local to the Memphis, TN, metropolitan area (including North MS and Crittenden County, AR) so that dogs can attend adoption events and be treated by our local team of veterinarians.
  • Apartment / Townhome / Condo Dwellers. We have foster families who live in apartments, townhomes, and condos, but please remember that not all dogs are a good fit for apartments, townhomes, or condos. If we do not feel like a dog is a good fit for an apartment, townhome, or condo, we will not place the dog with you to foster.
  • Renters. We have foster families who are renters. Before applying, check with your property manager and/or landlord regarding breed and/or size limitations. Please include the name of the property manager/landlord and their contact information in your application. We will contact them to confirm that they have given consent for you to foster a dog.
  • Fences. If you live in a single-family home, your yard must be fully fenced, and the fence must be permanently attached to the house, with a door leading from the home directly into the yard. The fence should be in good condition and secure. Any holes, loose boards, weak sections, open areas, etc., should be repaired BEFORE the home visit and fence check. This ensures the dog is contained safely within the yard. Fences are not required for apartment or condo dwellers. Electric and/or invisible fences are not accepted.
  • Rural Homes and Fences. If you live in a rural area on multiple acres, you must have a portion of your property permanently fenced for a dog. The fence must be permanently attached to the house, with a door leading from the home directly into the completely fenced-in yard. The fence should be in good condition and secure. Any holes, loose boards, weak sections, open areas, etc., should be repaired BEFORE the home visit and fence check. Electric/invisible fences are not accepted.
  • Other Pets in the Home. All other pets in the home must be spayed/neutered, up-to-date on shots, and current on heartworm and flea prevention. Pets must be available during the home visit to be introduced to the pet you hope to foster.
  • Veterinarian Check. We will contact your current veterinarian to confirm existing pets are spayed/neutered, up-to-date on shots, and current on heartworm & flea prevention. Please call your veterinarian and give consent to release your existing and/or prior pets' medical information to Tails of Hope Dog Rescue.
  • Fostering Puppies. Puppies aged 6 months and younger will only be placed in a foster home with at least one other puppy from the litter or an existing adult dog in the house. Puppies get bored, destructive, stressed, and are more prone to separation anxiety when left alone. Puppies also learn from other dogs, making them better adult dogs. Many adult dogs who were once cute puppies end up outside, dumped at shelters, or returned to Tails of Hope Dog Rescue. This requirement is in place to benefit the family and the puppy.
